Sandra (nee Carter) and Doug MacDonald are a young-old happily married couple of 37 years, the product of which has been two beautiful children, Scott who lives in White Rock, British Columbia with his wife Kimberley and our two extraordinary Grandchildren Jake (6 years) and Scarlett (1 year) and Allison who lives and works in Kanata and whose passion is horses. Sandra and Doug met in Sackville, New Brunswick where Doug was transferred as the Accountant at the Royal Bank of Canada. The two met on a blind date in 1965, fell in love and were married in 1966. Doug is a Perth boy, his connection to Perth goes back three generations. He grew up on Wilson Street West in the house which is now The Co-operators building. The Perth Planing Mill was two doors down (Doug's Grandfather Ally MacDonald was a cabinet maker there all his life). Doug's teenage years were spent at 63 Harvey Street, which was the homestead of his maternal Grandfather, Wellington Douglas, Vice President of Code Felt and Knitting Company. Doug joined the Royal Bank in 1958 and worked in Cornwall, Renfrew, Ottawa, Montreal, and Sackville. Sandra was a farm girl who followed him to the big city (Montreal). As a farm girl she learned the work ethic well. Another thing she learned was that the way to a man's heart was through his stomach (which pleased Doug). She tried for years to put some meat on his bones but without much success, his weight is still 145 pounds, the same weight he was at age 21. Sandra had a dream - she wanted to operate her own business. Having worked for private industry in her early working years and then working 18 years with Health Canada in Ottawa she had alway harboured a desire to "do it her way and on her terms". This she would save for her retirement. Doug , always accepting and encouraging (to a point) of his wife's desires agreed to participate in the Bed and Breakfast venture having taken his retirement 2 years earlier. There had been time for him to enjoy two full years of solitary retirement. The name Victoria House was decided upon for two reasons, firstly, the civic address is 1 Victoria Street and secondly, Oliver House, which was originally considered might have given our chocolate lab "Oliver" too much authority. The house had been very thoughtfully renovated by the previous owners Richard and Allison Ellard. They introduced many modern conveniences yet preserved the integrity of an Edwardian home. We are not sure if it is Victorian or Edwardian but it is approximately 100-years old. We are endeavouring to trace the history of the house. As a B&B it will have two suites, one (The Bing Suite)with an ensuite the other (The Cottage Suite) with a private bath. The private bath has all the original fixtures. One suite will have its own balcony. The house has three decks and an ample garden with many lilac trees. This Spring we will continue to structure our garden. For more information or to book accomodation, please visit their web site. They look forward to the pleasure of your company.
