Mississippi Valley Artmakers - Gothic Stone House

The following group of professional artists have put together a creative learning experience held in the charm of this gothic Norman stone building (built in 1900 - used as an Anglican church).

About the Artists

stained glass Janice Ling: is a painter and stained glass artist. Recognized for creating glass art for an award-winning home near Casa Loma in Toronto and other buildings, her style and designs are eclectic and are completed totally freehand. Her paintings capture the life-likeness of people, wildlife and display the whimsical moments of life in the country. While practicing Chiropody, she illustrated for medical texts and worked on creative programs for Harbourfront in Toronto as well as in Switzerland. Janice currently teaches art at the "School House" in McDonald's Corners. Janice and her family purchased the heritage Stone House in 1999 with the plan to restore and build it into a place for the Arts.

"I came to Perth in 1997 while pregnant with our first child as a stop over from white water rafting in Ottawa. We did not even know about Perth let alone eastern Ontario. We drove around checking out the artists during the Fall Tour and I told my husband that I liked the mentality and the creative enviroment there. We strolled downtown and walked in to a real estate office where a jean clad agent gave us his card.

We returned to our lives to downtown Toronto and I did some research about Perth at the library and was impressed and a year later, we came out to look at homes. We did not see anything that we liked and decided it was nice just to stay where we were. A year later (now we were expecting our second child), I received an e-mail about a heritage stone home on a river somewhere near Perth and although the image was not legible, we rented a car and came out to see the property. While still in the car, I had my cheque book ready. We bought it that week. We did not know where we were and just bought it. The rest is history."

wood turningHanne J. E. Quigley: is an award winning and published artist who enjoys life on her ranch north of Perth. She works from her home studio, inspired as well as encouraged by her family and her beautiful natural surrounding. Sensitive to her serene setting, she often uses other materials nature offers to embellish her turnings. She is fond of the look, feel and mystery of native woods such as cherry, maple, oak and walnut. Hanne's works have been exhibited at the Guild Shop, Bounty of Harbourfront and The Rosenbaum Gallery of Toronto.

monotypeFred Fowler: studied painting, printmaking and life drawing at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and the New School of Art, one of the Three Schools in Toronto. He paints in all mediums with focus on oil and water. Fred developed his unique style of monotype, a technique of painting without the use of the conventional brush. Fred participates in many juried Art shows and exhibitions and is the recipient of the Scarborough Purchase Award for his monotype. Originally from Pinion, Fred can often be found working from his cottage studio located a few doors west of the Stone House.
