Perth Service ClubsPerth of course has a number of service clubs: Perth Civitan ClubCivitan is a coined word that comes from the Latin word "Civitas," which means citizenship Special Olympics Winter GamesLate January or early February each year sees the Civitan Club of Perth play host to Special Olympic athletes from across Eastern Ontario. Tracks are laid out in both the front and back yards of the Perth Civitan Hall and the athletes compete in either cross country skiing or snow shoeing events. Lunch is supplied by the membership. All athletes receive awards for their efforts and leave for home later in the afternoon with promises to return again next year. Hugs are in great abundance throughout this day. Medical Lending BankAs we are all aware, medical appliances are extremely expensive. The Civitan Club of Perth has instituted a medical lending bank for the benefit of our community. Wheelchairs, scooters, canes, crutches and other necessary appliances are available for loan through the club. There is no cost for this service but the equipment is expected to return in the same state that it was received. Life Skills BusIn the year 2000, the Life Skills Program of the local hospital approached us in hopes that we might be able to assist in a small way with the acquisition of a new bus to transport their clients. Their old bus was getting very old and was going to require major work just to keep it on the road. The Civitan Club of Perth came through for them and with $30,000 from the club and the other $30,000 from the Ontario Ministry of Community and Social services they got their new bus. Perth Junior Civitan ClubThe Perth Junior Civitan Club assists its parent club with several of its projects throughout the year. This year, they assisted the Civitan Club of Perth in hosting the Ontario Special Olympics, Region 5, snowshoeing and cross country skiing competitions which were held in February at the Perth Civitan Hall. They also walked the parade route during the Perth Fair Parade, carrying buckets to collect donations for the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Junior Civitans operate the coat check during the Seniors' Christmas dinner and help with the Children's Miracle Network Telethon as well as many other Civitan Club projects. As a result of their efforts in the 1999-2000, 2000-2001, 2001-2002, 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 years, the Perth Junior Civitan Club has achieved the status of Honor Club of Distinction. The Perth Junior Civitan Club meets on the every Thursday, excluding July and August, at 7:00 p.m. at Perth Civitan Hall, County Road 43, Perth, Ontario. Junior Civitan membership is a great way to get involved and meet new friends. It's also an exceptional way of acquiring the mandatory forty-hours of community involvement activities towards your Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Visit the Perth Civitan Web Site.
